Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you are probably aware that WoW is celebrating its 5 year anniversary. What you probably don’t know, however, is that Monolith (WoW edition) is also celebrating its 5 year anniversary! This is something that I’m extremely proud of, and also a bit awed by. There aren’t that many guilds out there that can say they have been here since Day One! Sure, we’ve had our ups and downs, but we’ve persevered. This is something that I think is worth a bit of celebration.
I have spent a good bit of time over the past few months preparing an anniversary celebration for us. We’ve opened it up to anyone and everyone that is in our guild to participate, regardless of guild rank. We decided on five events that we are going to host over the course of the evening during our regularly scheduled raid time(this Sunday!), and have been slowly “leaking” the events to the guild via our website for the past couple of weeks. Because I’m so excited, I thought I’d share our plans with all of you! Including the elusive fifth event that we haven’t announced to the guild just yet :)
Event: Character Costume Contest
When: During Monolith Celebration
First Place Prize: Tundra Mammoth or Mechano Chopper, you can choose! (There will be a cash option if you already have the mounts and/or just want the cash!)
Second Place Prize: Blizzard Authenticator
Third Place Prize: Orb of Deception
Rules: Using only items available to you through normal game play create a costume for your character that you think embodies an adventure in WoW over the past five years. Your costumes can be themed or just outright fun. You will have the opportunity to tell us a bit about your costume (are you a defias scout? A hillsbrad farmer? A fisherman? A new raid boss? The hooker working the street in Stormwind? Hey! There is certainly attire out there to support it!). Roleplay during your explanation is permitted but not required. All commentary by you must be done in text. You are permitted to created a character specifically for the purpose of this contest (i.e. you are not required to do this on your main).
We encourage creativity and uniqueness in creating the costumes, and hope to have a lot of laughs as they are presented to us!
Don’t want to dress up?!?! That is OK too, you can still participate! You can take part in the judging! (Think holding up cards with numbers…only in guild chat ;))
Judging of the costumes will be done on a scale of 1-10 using the following categories:
Hilarity (not counted into final score).
Good Luck everyone! And have fun collecting your costumes :)
I don’t know how many folks we have participating in the “costume” part of this event yet…but I do know that I’ve heard rumblings about people working up costumes! I expect it to be a ton of fun and filled with a few laughs, and I am very excited to see what people came up with. The mammoth reward is probably our biggest prize give-a-way during the celebration, so when we were coming up with contests, I wanted to make sure that the contest with this prize was something that would be equally accessible to 100% of the people in our guild.
Event: Skill > Gear contest
When: During Monolith Celebration
Where: STV Arena
Winner’s Prize: Authenticator + Sandbox Tiger
Preparation: You must have enough space in your bags to remove *all* of your gear that is weighted with any stat. That is to say that you may wear a vanity item (lovely black dress, for example), but may not wear any gear containing an actual stat.
Rules: Everyone will enter the arena completely devoid of all gear. You may use *only* physical attacks throughout the challenge…yes, you must punch each other to death! Once you are down, you are down, however, you may offer assistance and/or try to help those that remain standing (watch out!, etc). You are permitted to forge alliances at the start of the contest…but remember there will only be one last man standing! So at some point, those alliance will have to turn their back on you!
Oh…and Brade will be in the arena ;)
Good Luck and Have Fun!
When coming up with this one, I knew I wanted to do something in the arena, I just wasn’t sure what. I ultimately decided on this iteration of the arena event because I wanted it to be something that was just ridiculously fun…and didn’t give anyone an unfair advantage based on gear, etc. I am most curious to see who will use the “alliances” option, and who will be pegged to fall first :)
Event Three – This event was actually inspired (i.e. shamelessly stolen) by Spexie.
Event: The Great Dalaran Race
When: During Monolith Celebration
Where: Starts at the Violet Citadel
Items Required: Two stacks of very strong alcohol
First Place Prize: Authenticator + Papa Hummel’s Pet Biscuit
Second Place Prize: Orb of Deception
Third Place Prize: Footpath of Cenarius
Rules: For the duration of the race, you must remain “completely smashed”. If at any time this debuff starts to fade, you must drink again until you are “completely smashed”. At the start of the race everyone will start on the ledge by the violet citadel. You must run around the violet citadel staying on the ledge at all times. If you fall of the ledge, you can go back to the start and start again. You must stay on foot the entirety of the race. The first person to reach the other side, still on the ledge wins! *
*We did find one spot where a pillar actually prevent you from staying on the ledge, so we will work around that by letting people drop off the ledge to the right, just before the first pillar, mount, and then land on the ledge just on the other side of the first pillar.
For this one, I knew that I wanted to do something in Dalaran, so that people took notice of us. After reading Spexie’s write up of her very bored evening, I knew this would be perfect! I expect a lot of giggles and some great FRAPS from this particular event!
Event: Monolith Trivia Challenge
When: Throughout the Monolith Celebration
Prize: Authenticator + Your choice of a Pet Shop Pet
Rules: All questions will be related to Monolith’s 5 year history on the realm and Warcraft’s 5 year history online. We will tally up all the correct answers and the person with the most correct answers at the end of the evening wins! You may use outside sources and ask around to seek out these answers.
I know that I wanted to do a trivia challenge. Why? Because they are fun and I love trivia! But this one is tricky, because we have some folks that have been in the guild since day one and some that joined with Wrath. So, we needed to make it so that it was fun…but the prize wasn’t such that those that maybe don’t know all of the answers would feel hugely left out. This is also part of the reason that we are spreading it over the course of the entire evening as an ongoing event. Hopefully as the night progresses there will be a lot of fun and unique information about the guild and a lot of remembering and laughter.
Event Five – This one hasn’t even been announced to the guild yet! (but will be soon). I actually started working this event out after being inspired by Larisa and her story about celebrating her guild’s anniversary back in June.
Event: A Wrinkle in Time, Monolith Style
When: During the Monolith Anniversary Celebration – This will be the “kick-off” event starting at 7:00. There is some organization involved, so please be sure you are punctual!
Where: Orgrimmar – Thrall’s Throne
Prize: Guild Bank repairs for one character of your choice (within your own arsenal of mains/alts) for one month and a special guild rank during that time.
Wha?: Fear not, good explorers! You will not be asked to partake on this journey alone! Your brave leaders will assign you companions for your journey before you set out on this adventure! Yes, Frodo, you will have help! (You will learn more about this event on Sunday…we can’t give away everything! ;))
Rules: There are a few very important rules that need to be announced with regards to this event. These rules will be reiterated before the start of the event, and if, at anytime, you are uncertain if something is acceptable ask!
- You may not use any form of teleports as a means of travel from one point to the next. This includes, but is not limited to: Mage teleports, BRD teleporters, Engineering teleporters, Wyrm Holes, etc. Use of such devices will disqualify you from the contest. If you are uncertain if you may use something, please ask!
- You may not use warlock summons as a means of travel from one point to the next. However, you may utilize instance summoning stones.
- You must actually seek out and perform your given tasks in game. Use of outside materials such as “strategy guides” or websites (i.e. WoWhead) will disqualify your team.
- You may not “phone a friend”, or seek help from someone that is outside of your team. Doing so will disqualify your team.
- You may not use outside tools in an attempt to speed your task (i.e. dreamless sleep potions), or spells that are unique to you (i.e. mind vision, farsight). Use of such things will disqualify your team.
Good Luck, have fun, and see you Sunday!
This is the event that I am the most excited about and have spent the most time creating! What you see above is sorta the “teaser” that we are going to be posting on the forums. So let me tell you a little bit about what the event is (SPOILER WARNING: those guildmates that read the blog, I’m going to discuss the event below (without giving you an advantage) so stop reading here if you want to save the surprise for Sunday!).
What we wanted to do was encompass Monolith’s journey through WoW over the past five years. Monolith has always been a raiding guild, and so what we have done is tried to re-create this journey in a trivia/scavenger hunt type of activity. We have created “tasks” that will lead each group to something related to each dungeon that we have raided since the start of the game. Each group will start with a different clue, but will not be solving their clue at the same time as another group, i.e. two groups cannot have the same clue simultaneously.
To give you kind of an idea of what we are doing, here is an example of a clue that we had come up with, but then had to ditch when they re-vamped Onyxia and made her level 80:
We have heard of a great and powerful matron within the Black Dragonflight that has been tasked with creating a brood to assist with the destruction of Azeroth as we know it. We have heard rumors that she is somewhat vulnerable currently, as she protects her hatchlings within her lair. In order to bolster our defenses against this threat, we need to know how many eggs she is currently protecting. It is a dangerous task, but one that must be done my good friend. Can you help gather this intelligence for us?
So, what that team would have to do would be to go into Onyxia’s lair and somehow *smiles* count up those eggs. Once they have provided the “intelligence” to us, they will then be given another task until they have completed all of the tasks. The final task is quite funny…but I will have to wait and share it after Sunday :)
I am hoping that Sunday will be a great deal of fun for everyone, and that we have lots of people who opt to partake in the event. Throughout the night, I’m sure there will be lots of laughs, and I’m sure some fireworks displays! We actually have 6 or 7 authenticators to give away, so we may raffle off the last few at the end of the event! I will try to get some good screenshots of the events as we do them, and post a follow-up about how the events went.
I hope everyone’s anniversary celebrations and holiday weekends are enjoyable!
