Wha? Where’d This Come From?!   12 comments

So…here are the first round results of my adventures with CSS!

What I have done is very basic.  I took a theme and tweaked some of the settings and all of the colors in it to come to a result that I like :)

However, there are a few things that I am still working on learning how to do, so you may still see a tweak or two as I experiment and swear  learn a bit more.  My Preliminary To Do list includes:

  • Creating a bar to seperate my side bar on the left from the content text.
    • Alternatively, changing the side bar color slightly so that it seperates from the content text.
  • Tweaking the width some so that those with non-wide screen monitors do not have to scroll to the right to see all of the content text.
    • On my non-wide screen monitor I have about an inch I have to scroll.  I think I just need to work out the content ratios to get that all squared away.
  • Create and Update my pages (not really “design” related, but um…it’s a to do list, so I thought I’d toss it on here!)

Also, I wouldn’t be complete without a huge thanks to Lashaah for designing my banner!

I am open to any comments, suggestions or critiques that you may have to offer!  Keep in mind, however, that I started this project with zero coding knowledge, and my abilities are still extremely basic at this juncture.  So please, be gentle!

  1. I have about 2.5 in of horiz scrolling. But I have a small laptop monitor, and other sites (Jaedia’s comes to mind) also have horiz scrolling on my computer.

    But otherwise it looks great! :D I like it.

  2. Yeah scrolling very broken on a macbook with a non-maximized window.

  3. I have about a half inch of scrolling to do on this lame non-widescreen monitor – just a bit!

    But it looks great! :)

  4. Looks great!

    Just needs more rhinestones.

  5. Looks very nice :)

  6. Ooh I like it. It’s “new” but still has the druidy feel and mostly same colors of the old version.

  7. I love it, and especially love that header. Gorgeous!

    Maybe you can find a similar layout that is liquid (or fluid). Then just copy&paste your changes/color choices to take advantage of the floaty/liquid width :)

    I love webdesign and find CSS fascinating but too much work for me. More power to you for sticking with it!

    As an idea, instead of trying to make a bar to separate menu from content, maybe try a slight background color change in that menu section. ;)

    I am sneaky and use http://www.colorspire.com/ to look at colors ;)

  8. Looking good! My non-widescreen work monitor has a tiny bit of scrolling still…

  9. Looks gorgeous, I love it.

    (but I do have a widescreen monitor so scrolling isn’t an issue).

  10. New reader here – it’s very good! Site is very very good and your first attempt at CSS is quite nice. A little scrolling, but your color choices are very relaxing, and easy to read.

    Nice job! Wish I was on your server! :D

  11. Hi I just stumbled across your blog through the wordpress global tags. Making your theme 1280 pixels wide can cause issues as about a fifth of web users still view at 1024 by 768 pixel screen resolution and will see horizontal scrollbars which makes your content less accessible. It should be fairly easy to add a divider, take a peek at the code below and see if it gives you any ideas. If you do make your pages narrower you’ll have to shrink your header image too! Otherwise it looks really good, well done!

    body.fixed-width #wrap, body.fixed-width #footer {width:1000px;}
    body.fixed-width #content {width:670px;}
    #content {border-left:3px solid #97C000; padding-left:30px;}
    #wrap #nav {margin-bottom:0;}
