My major tip is to forgo armrests on your chair, they are considered a major factor in causing arm and hand pain.

Hello,

I too am having physical side effects from long hours in front of a computer. I sit in front of a computer at work for 8 hours a day. Then I go home to my addiction (World of Warcraft) and play about 4 hours a night (after work). I play anywhere from 12-16 hours a day on the weekends and on my days off.

My problem is a little different however; my problem is in my feet. For about a year now, my feet have been swelling. At the end of the day when I am all said and done with work and gaming, and ready for bed, my feet are the size of watermelons. I found out (or at least I think I found out) it is due to the cutting off of circulation in my legs. When I sit in a chair I noticed there is a lot of pressure on the back of my legs where my butt and legs sit in the chair. And I believe that it is this pressure that is preventing the smooth flow of circulation through my legs down to my feet. I came to this conclusion because when I was on a 2 week vacation, my feet went back to normal size and they felt good. I wasn’t at a computer for 2 weeks. I’ve tried different chairs and what not but nothing seems to help. I figured it’s got to be the ergonomics of the chairs I’ve been sitting in. I was wondering if anybody out there has experienced this and maybe a recommendation of a good chair? I hope this makes sense to somebody. I am not Dr. House or anything but I hope someone out there knows what I’m talking about. -Josh

Ok, I feel really dumb because I can't find the button to reply to a specific comment....coffee! Work faster!

Anyway, yeah Beru, the nice thing with the STC chairs (and I'm sure other high end chairs) is that all the pieces can be replaced *mostly* independent of the others. The sucky thing is that the discount for parts is terrible compared to the discount you can get for a brand new chair, BUT! it's nice when you want to swap something out (like a new seat & back). I too have cloth and figure that the cloth will wear out before the chair actually does - I've never heard of them actually recovering it without going to an outside vendor that recovers all kinds of furniture.

@ Eden - Before you write off a nice ergonomic chair as out of your price range, talk to a sales person at the dealership. The big furniture mfgs have a huge price range for their various lines (the list price is mostly irrelevant since, at least at my old dealership, we passed along some variety of discount to every customer), and even if new prices are too much, they will usually have pre-owned chairs available for sale that are less than what you would pay for new and they're still in good condition.

Great article...I just moved into a new apartment and am typing this from the floor :(

I have not been playing much WoW as a result...it is too uncomfortable.

I will be purchasing a desk and chair soon though! I will definitely keep your article in mind.

However the price of the Steelcase chairs......is definitely not for a fledgling career girl aiming to own her own house in the next five years :( /sigh IKEA it is!

I had this happen too. I believe my desk chair was a bit to low and started causing me back pain. Then, I had an "ah-ha" moment as I looked at my unadjustable desk chair, then my laptop, then a fateful glance at my recliner.
I sit in that recliner now with a laptop table to set my laptop on. My husband is sad.

We have the Aeron chairs at work, and I just can't get past the mesh. I just don't really care for it and it gives me waffle legs if I wear a skirt :( I know a lot of people love them though! I'm apparently a minority!

I'm hoping that the investment of a good chair at home really pays off - and your comfort stories give me hope! Now to get all these fandangled knobs adjusted.... ;)
