My Bags, My Business!   6 comments

I am an EJ benefactor. What does that mean? Well pretty simply that I support EJ by giving an annual donation to help support the maintenence of their forums.

Beru, I hear you say, wtf does this have to do with your backpack size?!?! Well…I’m gettin’ there!

Anyhow, one of the “perks” of being a benefactor is access to forms that are only open to benefactors. Within these forums there is all manner of topics discussed. The other day, I read a comment from another benefactor who indicated that he had no pity for anyone complaining about bag space who was carrying around a titanium seal of Dalaran…

And I thought “damn, it’s a good think this guy can’t peak into my bags!”, because, um, yea…

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Do you see my backpack?! It is full of what I consider “fun” things that enhance my gameplay! Let’s take an inventory of the kind of “junk” that I am carrying around:

A Party Bomb – because sometimes you’ve just got to dance!

A Toy Train – um, hi, choo choo; ’nuff said.

One Red Ribbon Leash – I have 129 non-combat pets! You seriously don’t expect me to walk them without a leash, do you?

One Super Simian Sphere – Monkey Ball. That is all.

Pet Biscuits – My pets get hungry!

One Train Wrecker – uh…who can resist a tiny mechanical gnome who dances?!

One Murloc Suit – Hi, I can dress up as a Murloc whenever I want! This really doesn’t need justification, does it?

One Titanium Seal of Dalaran – because WoW doesn’t have a “coin flip” app!

An Ogre Pinata – You can loot bubble gum. BUBBLE GUM! *pop*

One Imp in a Ball – “will we kill HM LDW tonight?” “ask again later” yes, folks, this right here is the best raid planning tool available to you!

One Orb of the Sin’Dorei – Because WoW has yet to add a plastic surgeon to make Tauren as sexy as BELFs.

One Iron Boot Flask – ok…I’ll admit that these wired mechano-dwarfs kinda freak me out. But, sometimes I’m feeling short and stout dammit!

The Whistle of The White Raptor – tiny little dinasaurs that I can ride? Yes please.

One Foam Sword Rack – ever had a key person like a tank run late or go link dead before a pull? I promise this sucker will make everyone forget they are sitting with their thumb up their ass while waiting! Plus, um, “bonked” owns.

A spectral tiger sandbox toy thingie – because I can’t afford the real thing!

One Timbermaw Trinket – You never know when you might need your Furlbog guardian!

A Haunted Memento – I know it’s creepy…but at least I know I’m never alone!

Sure, perhaps these doo-dads aren’t mandatory to any sort of progression success, but they are a lot of fun! And why shouldn’t I carry around a veritable toy shop if it makes me laugh now and again? To me those little gadgets are just valuable in my bags as the gear sets, flask mats and glyphs that are required for raiding.

I guess maybe different people find different things important when considering how to allocate their precious bag space!

What kind of “essentials” are you carrying around in your bags?!

Is It The End of the World as We Know It?   5 comments

From the title of this post, you have learned two things. One, I liked R.E.M. in the 80s (laugh it up, they were still a good band!); and two, I’m going to be talking about the already very talked about changes to raid structure that were just announced in a Cataclysm preview. I know that I’m a little late to the party here, but that’s largely because I am not entirely sure how I feel about these changes. And to be completely honest, I’m still not sure how I feel about the changes.

So what do I think? I just don’t know. Let me try to break down my thoughts a bit. Read the rest of this entry »

Beru’s Make A Memory Challenge!   7 comments

Unless you’ve been trapped under a boulder that was hurled at you by a Gordunni Ogre, you are probably aware of the many changes that are coming our way with Cataclysm. Including significant changes to the original two continents of Azeroth that we were introduced to 5 years ago. If the hype we have been provided is to proved true, the worlds will be sundered and changed forever. As a result, there will be life in places that were cracked and broken before, and destruction in places that were formerly lush.

Now, before I had learned of Cataclysm, I had seriously considered making this my last expansion. But when I learned what was in store, I was hugely excited, and couldn’t imagine hanging up my mace just yet, and so I committed myself to at least one more expansion of the game. Because, well, who doesn’t want to fly into Nefarian’s lair to enter a dungeon?!

However, Cataclysm has done more than just get me excited to see all of the changes that are in store for us, it has also sent me many trips down memory lane. It’s been years since I’ve done anything other than rush my way to Outlands/Northrend in the old world. But now that I know that everything is going to be irrevocably changed, I have been taking the time to re-explore the game as it was when I first picked it up. The game that I grew to love, not with the fancy demons of the Outlands or the frozen wastes of Northrend, but with the original artwork and lore that was presented to me 5 years ago.

I’m leveling one last tiny alt before Cataclysm hits, and I’m taking my time doing it. I’m appreciating everything as it is now, because in six months, I don’t know what it will be. And that is kind of exciting. I’m in no rush to get anywhere. I run places instead of flying just to explore, and when I do fly, I often do it with my UI turned off just looking at what’s around me. Sure, I have memories of what this was like when I first encountered it, but like all memories, sometimes time makes them dusty. In essence, I am making memories that will be fresh when the world sunders, so that I can vividly remember what has changed. And my screenshot folder is busting at the seams as a result!

My challenge to everyone is to make, and share, your own memories before Cataclysm hits, and then revisit those memories after the world sunders and see exactly what has changed. You don’t have to do it on an alt, you can take your main and explore somewhere that you remember from your first experiences with WoW but haven’t been back since. But the goal is to appreciate what is there now, and explore how it changes. To remember things before it’s too late for them to be remembered! Take screenshots and share stories of new and old memories. But tuck a few things away in your scrapbook so that you have it to remember before it’s too late! And share them with all of us either on your own blog, or in the comments below, or even in my own future make a memory posts!

Cloudy, With A Chance of Storms   27 comments

This is my outlook for Cataclysm.

After calming down from my initial reaction to the proposed Tree of Life changes on Friday, and cooling my heels a bit, I have decided that I am decidedly unhappy regarding the changes, but the sky has not come crashing down just yet. (Yes, I said “yet”!). I understand that there are a few people that are very pleased to see Tree From go the way of the Dodo, and I can respect that, but I do not have to agree with it and I do not have to like it. In thinking about it some, I have decided that there are three (well, maybe more like three and a half) major reasons that I dislike the idea of ToL being a cool down going forward: Read the rest of this entry »

Tam’s Gift That Keeps on Giving!   4 comments

So, recently Tam decided that his holiday gift giving should start a little early this year.  What did he give everyone?  Why, a question to which he would like the answer.  What did Tam want to know about me?  He was curious to know about the most difficult decision I’ve had to make in WoW and how I felt about it in retrospect.

At first I looked at the question and went “man, I think I would have preferred the murloc one!”, but to be perfectly honest, the answer came to me very, very quickly. Read the rest of this entry »

Does the New Dungeon Finder Discourage Communication?   15 comments

Like many people this weekend, I spent a good deal of time utilizing the new dungeon finder tool.  I did groups with all my characters from Beru to Tsuname.  Some I did as complete PuGs, and some Brade joined me as a tank and we just had to PuG DPS.  Overall, my groups have been fairly solid, with just a few hiccups, and I’ve only had to place 3 people on ignore. But I have noticed one thing: more often than not, the groups never say a single thing to each other.

I really do like the dungeon finder tool, and it is quite clearly very popular.  But I wonder if it has taken some of the socialization out of what is supposed to be a social game.  It is a little bit disconcerting to enter into a group and never even get so much as a “hello” or “good evening” before you get down to business.  I understand that people aren’t necessarily there to shoot the breeze, but would a little bit of social courtesy be such a bad thing? 3.3: Haste Gear or Set Bonuses?   4 comments

So, this is my dilemma and, at this time, I do not have an answer.  But with 3.3 upon us today, I need to get it figured out pronto!

After much thought, I, personally, will be picking up the 18/0/53 celestial focus spec.  To do this, I will be giving up the following 7 points from my current 11/0/60 resto spec:

  • Living Seed (3)
  • Improved Barkskin (2)
  • Empowered Touch (2)

The reasons that I am doing this are:

  • I am primarily a raid healer in 25 man progression content.   Getting back as close to our current 1 second GCD will be important for me (I think).
  • Living Seed is frequently less than 2% of my overall healing.  While it is nice to have, I think the haste is going to end up being more throughput for me as a whole.
  • Empowered Touch (Nourish, Healing Touch) is also frequently less than 5% of my overall healing.  While it was nice to have those bigger nourishes when I used nourish, the haste is again going to give me more throughput for what I’m tasked to do in our 25 man settings.
  • Improved Barkskin.  I loved this talent.  I really did.  It seemed to a lot of people to be a throw away talent, but I can’t tell you how helpful that extra mitigation was as we worked hard modes.  However, in the big picture, it was 2 points that were pretty easy to give up for the extra haste.

I know that not everyone will agree with the reasons, or the talents, that I’m opting to drop for the 3% haste offered by celestial focus, and that is fine.  But it is something that I am going to test out and see if it is beneficial for me and if I how it affects my throughput.  That, however, is a decision that I already made…and not, per se, the topic of this post.  The big question at hand, which I do not have an answer for is:  Should I drop my 4 T9 set bonus for non-tier haste gear?

I have looked for an answer to this question, and so far have not found anything definitive.  If I keep my 4 piece T9, along with my current 245/258 items regardless of if they have haste, I sit just under 600 haste.  Recall that to reach the 1 second GCD you require 750 haste, assuming all of your raid buffs and 3/3 Celestial Focus, which I will have.  If I swap around an item of two here and there, namely my breastplate and off-hand, I reach just over 700 haste, with only a slight loss to spell power…but I also lose my T9 set bonus.

Now, at the point I am at haste wise, we are talking tenths of seconds with regards to my GCD reaching 1 second flat.  How much will that matter?  Are those tenths of seconds worth giving up the set bonus for?  Tentatively, I think not.  But I could be quite wrong about this.  I won’t know for certain until I get into a raid setting and see how sluggish I feel, and analyze the parses to see where everything fits.  However, if things seem hugely slow, I may well decide that it is worth the loss of the bonus to equip a few haste pieces instead of set pieces.  I may also swap out a gem here or there for one with a touch of haste on it.  The last I recall reading haste and spellpower were scoring out about equally for throughput.

Now, getting into T10, I absolutely would not give up haste for the 2 pieces bonus, as it’s a rubbish bonus.  But what about the 4 piece T10?  I just don’t know.

How about all of you?  Are you giving up your set bonuses for haste pieces?  Are you keeping your set bonuses?  Are you flat out staying away from the haste train?

Are You Ready For Patch 3.3?   7 comments

I am not.

The rumor mill has been grinding out speculation on a release date for this patch, with the most popular believe being that it’s going to hit a week from today, on December 8.  I am hoping that it’s later…but with reality (and another push on the downloader) setting in, it probably is going to be sooner rather than later. *grumbles*  I would have liked another few weeks to seal the deal on HM 25 Anub.  I would have liked to not have to worry about progression over the holidays.  It is looking, however, like my only hope is that we can plow through the first wing before Christmas and the next wing won’t be released until after the new year.

Well…rather than sulking over things I can’t control, I suppose I should embrace all of the things that patch 3.3 is bringing with it:

  • Cross Server LFG - this should be a good thing for all those who are looking to PuG.  It’s hard enough sitting in LFG trying to get a group going, but it’s even more disheartening to realize that you are one of two people in LFG.  This should help make groups more prevalent.
  • Ice Crown Citadel 5 man – this is a 3 wing tiered 5 man, with lots of shiny new loot.  Cool…I think.  I haven’t really been following up on this much, but I am sure I will run it ad nauseum on any number of my characters.  Here’s hoping it’s a cool place!
  • Ice Crown Citadel 10/25 Raid – I always enjoy new raid content, but we’ve got two bosses to finish up still in the old content!  Algalon 25 and HM 25 Anub!  I imagine that there will still be time in our raid schedule to finish them up, with the tiered release.  But still…would have been nice to get them done before the next tier of content!
    • With this comes the next legendary, Shadowmourne.  If you are in a position to make a decision on how this newest orange is awarded, be sure that you finalize that decision before going into ICC!
    • Prepare for new gear!  Start stockpiling your gems and enchanting materials for the new items that will be coming along in ICC.
    • Make sure that your herbs are in order for flasks and potions that may be needed for progression content.
    • Strategies!  Start thinking about them.  While there isn’t a huge amount out there yet on these encounters, there is enough information to start forming preliminary ideas for how you want to tackle something.
  • Achievements – If you like them…there will be several new ones to start working on.

I, personally, have started digging up what information I can surrounding the first four bosses being unlocked in the Citadel: Lord Marrowgar, Lady Deathwhisper, Gunship Battle and Deathbringer Saurfang.  I have also been hording some of my gems, rather than selling them, and making sure I have lots of flowers to make potions with!

How about you?  Are you ready for the patch?  What are you doing to prepare?

Let’s Go Back to Nerfing Paladins Again, mmmkay?   Leave a comment

Warning: Rant Ahoy!

Gift of the Earthmother now increases your total spell haste by 2/4/6/8/10%.

You know what that is?  Another rejuv nerf (and a slight buff to any spell with a cast time).  Alone, it may have been fine, but paired with the earlier announcement of reducing rank 15 rejuv by a tick, this is a pretty heavy handed swing of the nerf bat.  A swing that is roughly a 25% reduction to our throughput.  Ouch.

The preliminary number crunching being done over at EJ is showing that spamming regrowth as your “go to” raid heal may well become more effective than using rejuv, at least throughput wise.  Are you kidding me?  Even more reason not to pick up that shitty 4 T10 bonus…hell, it’s a reason to drop any 4 piece set bonus with rejuv as the bonus.  That’s right folks!  Step right up and get your discount set bonuses today!  Better start stacking up on those non-set haste pieces that you’ve been sharding.

Of course, to be fair…I think without even trying and a few pieces that I’ve just recently picked up I’m over 450 haste.  The more haste we can get without effecting our other stats on our gear, the better position that we will be in if these changes go live.  It also makes one wonder about how the new rejuv haste glyph will play out.  Viva la Haste! (I guess).

I just don’t understand the push towards rejuv on all of our gear/idols.  And then the heavy handed nerf.  Yes, it was powerful, but why keep pushing us into that pigeon hole if you want us to diversy?  It just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.  Of course, I also am fairly certain that a lot of these changes that we are seeing are becasue they have decided to haste rejuv.  The theory of which has received mixed reception by the community.  I, personally, am undecided on how I feel about it.  I want to see how it will play out in a raiding environment.  Is it going to be useful 100% of the time, or highly situational?  What is really going to suck, is if hasted rejuvs arerubbish, and we took all these nerfs to make them work.

I know…the sky isn’t falling.  The world isn’t coming to an end.  We will just gear more haste, adapt and move along as always.  It’s just irritating to be hit twice in one patch!

(edited out a super ranty, falling off topic bit on Nourish I had here.  I felt it was an overly aggressive rant for me, and somewhat distracting to the post).

Isn’t there something else you need to nerf with like…divine plea or ret paladin burst damage again?  Can’t you just leave us alone?

Oh, before I forget, they gave us this little piece of sugar to help the medicine go down:   Rebirth - The cooldown on this spell has been lowered from 20 minutes down to 10 minutes. Cannot be used in Arenas.  Whoopee. /sarcasm

*sigh*  I am sure we will cope.  I am sure we will work around it.  I’m sure they will nerf whatever spell we move to once again be highly effective healers.  So it goes.

Bleh.

By the way…if you are actually looking for some constructive numbers on how these changes affect us, check out Kae’s Post.

On Goblins and Guild Leveling   Leave a comment

I think that my favorite Cataclysm announcement to come from Blizzcon was the introduction of Guild Leveling.  When it was first announced it as a function, without going into any detail, I will admit to being trepedatious of the feature.  I thought “oh god, I hate leveling in groups, this is going to be awful”.  However, as I followed it through to the game systems panel, I found myself more and more excited about what it is actually going to work.  In fact, I was so excited about it, that I’m fairly certain that I bored a good number of my party at Blizzcon talking about it.

Let’s take a look at the nuts and bolts of guild leveling, and then what I think it will do for the game. Read the rest of this entry »
