Are You A Hunter or A Warlock?   1 comment

What?  You are?!?!  Well then I have a deal for you!

You see Monolith is looking for you!  That is to say that we are looking to add a skilled Hunter and Warlock to our progression roster.  I’ve included our entire recruitment “blurb” after the break, but thought I’d highlight a few things here!

  • We are a group of adults seeking enjoyment from the game, the majority of our members are working adults with schedules and commitments outside of raiding.  Our median age is mid to late 20′s.
  • We have very low tollerance for Drama, and a very high demand for respect.
  • We put a strong focus on individual performance and accountability – you will frequently receive feedback and constructive criticism on your performance.
  • We have a strong team environment, firmly believing that you are only as strong as your weakest member.

Still interested?  Follow the break to learn more or visit our website!  Please don’t hesitate to nudge me personally if you have questions or want more information!

Monolith Recruitment   1 comment

I know some people dislike utilizing their blogs for recruitment purposes.  However, as part of our leadership I take a different view on that.  I see it as part of my job to use every tool and avenue available to seek out the best applicants that we can find and add to our roster.  I think that my blog is a good tool to do that with, as long as I’m not constantly spamming everyone on a frequent basis with recruitment posts I don’t think any of my readers overly mind (I could be wrong!).  But since it is my blog, and I put my heart into my guild, I’m going to go ahead and use this venue to let folks know that we have a couple of limited raid positions open at this time.

Specifically, we are recruiting:

  • One healer – Paladin, Priest or Shaman (sorry druids!  we have 3 on our roster already!)
  • One Hunter
  • In lieu of a hunter, we would consider any exceptional ranged DPS.

Anyone interested can learn more about who we are at www.monolithwow.com.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!  You are always free to shoot me an email at fallingleaves51@gmail.com with questions as well.

You can find our recruitment information here.  I have also copied it after the break, if you’d like to look it over without visiting another site!

Beware!   37 comments

I am disgusted. Absolutely disgusted.

After 5 years of this game, I thought that I had seen the worst that WoW had to offer. I had seen the seamy underbelly, the lows that sometimes people go to in this game. But I was wrong. Never before had I seen such disgusting behavior as I saw last night. And the worst part of it? Apparently it was some of our own innocent efforts that brought this deplorable behavior to our front door!

Ok, I am probably losing people. Perhaps, I should back up a bit here and start my story from the beginning. Yes, I think I probably should do just that. Read the rest of this entry »

Sometimes There is Punch and Pie!   Leave a comment

Monolith is still looking for a few people that we feel will be a good fit for our guild, which in turn means that I’m still in the process of recruiting. Which means that recruiting is on my brain about 65% of the time that my brain is functioning! We don’t over-recruit, so we basically only fill the spots that are open in our roster, however this has one serious detriment: when you have a hole…it’s a hole, which means that sometimes you have to be creative about shoving some plumber’s putty into the hole as a quick fix (like having your feral druid get all his healing gear in order…just in case) until it’s permanently filled. We’ve been fairly fortunate that we some friends and/or folks with nicely geared alts that have stepped in to fill those holes from time to time, but it still leaves us with a gap that needs to be permanently filled.

Because I am responsible for recruiting, and because we are somewhat selective with applicants due to wanting to make sure they are a good fit for us, I am again utilizing all of the sources that I have available to me to perform this task. That means that I am once again posting about recruiting here, on the blog. I do apologize if you find this tacky, but hope you understand the unenviable position that I am in and forgive me!

I am pretty transparent about my guild here so if you’ve followed me for any period of time, and I’ve not scared you off, you have a good feel for what we are about. If you just recently found me, or just don’t know a lot about Monolith, you can read up a little bit about who we are and our expectations after the break! We are 6/12 ICC Hard Modes currently, and hoping to add another one or two to our tally this week. So we are looking to add some folks for continued Hard Mode Progression.

What we are looking for: Right now we are looking to add one or two healers to our roster. Our preference would be a Holy Priest or Resto Shaman, but we may consider an exceptional Holy Paladin or Resto Druid.

But, I don’t heal! You say. That is ok! Because we are also looking to add one Rogue or Feral DPS Druid to the roster. We may also consider one exceptional Shadow Priest as well.

How to Apply: All of our applications are confidential, and can be found at www.monolithwow.com

Questions?: Feel free to ask them in the comments below, or email me at fallingleaves51

Monolith Recruiting Heals!   Leave a comment

I hate recruiting more than just about anything else in the game! Alas, it is my task to ensure that we have enough raiders to make our raids happen. I am so very thankful that we don’t have to recruit with much frequency *knocks on wood*, largely because it’s stressful for everyone! I am pretty transparent about my guild here so if you’ve followed me for any period of time, and I’ve not scared you off, you have a good feel for what we are about! If you just recently found me, or just don’t know a lot about Monolith, you can read up a little bit about who we are and our expectations after the break!

We run a pretty slim, but very strong, healing roster of 8 members. However, due to some real life issues and the approaching summer, we are looking to add another healer or maybe two as we start to work on ICC hard modes.

What we are looking for: Right now we are recruiting for a Disc Priest (but may consider an exceptional holy priest). We are also considering adding a Holy Paladin or Resto Shaman to our roster.

How to Apply: All of our applications are confidential, and can be found at www.monolithwow.com

You Never Know…   3 comments

A lot of people will often talk about the internet anonymity theory, and from personal experience, I find that there is a lot of truth to the theory.  There is definitely something about knowing that you are 100% completely anonymous that turns some people into complete and total assholes.  Why am I telling you something you already know?!  (I can hear you wondering this from here!).  Well, I’d like to use this post as a tale of caution for people who someday may want to consider joining a guild, any  guild.

As a public service announcement, I would like to remind everyone right now that you never know who you may be interacting with, and how those people may or may not affect your future in the game!  Here are a few key behaviours that are likely to get a guild application rejected solely based on how you are perceived by those you interact with on a day to day basis:

  • “Everyone remembers an Asshole” ~ Confucius according to Rimar -  Did you just train mobs on that guy questing that got to the quest mob before you?  Did you ninja items in a PuG?  Did you drop a dungeon group after you got what you wanted?  Yea, these are the things that people remember about you.  Maybe you were just having a bad day, maybe you are a saint the rest of the time!  It only takes one time to rub someone the wrong way for them to remember you as “that asshole that…”.  It could have been a day ago or a year ago, people have long memories for this type of thing; however, never fear, it’s pretty easy to fix this problem:  Just be respectful.
  • The Trade Channel Guy – Yea, you know who you are.  You are the guy that has nothing better to do than spam trade chat all day.  From being annoying to being abusive, being the trade channel guy is not going to do you a whole lot of favors when it comes time to have people take you seriously!  I can’t tell you how many times we’ve asked about an applicant to hear “he’s an ass in trade chat, that’s all I really know”…and that is enough for us to know we aren’t interested.  How you present yourself on an everyday basis tells people a lot about you!
  • The Forum Guy - Closely related to Trade Chat Guy, The Forum Guy is often much worse, as he immortilizes his level of assholeishness for everyone to see.  The forum guy is the guy that berates everyone and tells them how terrible they are.  The forum guy is the guy that responds to someone who is asking for help with “lul L2P”.  People will remember you, Forum Guy!  Especially if you had something to say in the past about the guild that you are applying for now.
  • The Best Player on the Server - Anyone claiming to be “the best” has one major flaw, in my opinion.  They fail to realise that they have somewhere to improve.  Someone that doesn’t recognize the room for growth is going to be someone that is never going to be “the best” of anything.  Of course, they also have another thing…a huge ego!  People that generally do nothing but talk about how great they are usually aren’t, well, that great!  It is important to remember that modesty is also an important skill to have.
  • The Trash Talker - You know who you are.  The guy that has to make yourself feel better by trying to make others feel bad.  The guy in the instance that feels that the only way to make your group successful is to tell everyone else how much they suck.  The guy from another server that has to log in an alt on your server just to tell you how awful you are.  The guy that PMs you back after you’ve rejected his application with “I didn’t want to be part of your shit guild anyhow, have fun being mediocre”…and then applies again on another character!  Yea, we will remember you…and then deny your membership into our mediocre club once again!

Yes, it never ceases to amaze me that people think their behavior in game, or out, will not be noticed and taken into account when completing an application to a guild.  It never ceases to amaze me that respect is apparently nothing more than an Aretha Franklin song to some people.   It never ceases to amaze me that people think that skill should trump every other aspect of the game.

You have been warned!  You never know who may be evaluating your actions!  The internet and your anonymity really does not grant you the lack of accountability that you think it does.

Monolith is looking for Resto Shaman and Shadow Priests!   Leave a comment

I am a bit hesitant to do this here, in large part because I’m not sure that my blog is the best place for it.  I want this to be a place for information and intellegent discussion on unique topics.  But, we have been recruiting in some form or fashion for 3 months now, and the general channels are not providing us with the applicants that we need to fill the holes in our raid roster.  So, I thought that I’d utilize this channel to advertise our guild a bit.

After reading through the obiligatory recruitment blurb below, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.  I will be happy to answer any quesitons that you might have :)

Class Needs:
We are currently recruiting the following to supliment our raid roster:

Two Shadow Priests;
One or Two Resto Shaman;
One Mage.

Introduction:
Monolith is a Day One horde guild on the Llane (est) server. Monolith started as a group of friends that have been raiding together since EQ1. We are currently 13/14 (3/9 HM) in Ulduar and 4/5 in Crusader’s Coliseum, and are focusing our progression on Ulduar Hard Modes and the new challenges presented to us in the Crusader’s Coliseum.

Our primary goal as a guild is to push end game content, while maintaining an environment conducive to being a working adult. We will not have world firsts, and we will likely not have realm firsts, but we do offer the opportunity to play with like minded adults, who want to enjoy the end game while pushing the content that is available to us.

Schedule:
Monolith raids 4 nights a week: Sunday from 7:00 – Midnight; Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 – Midnight. All of our invites start 15 minutes prior to the scheduled raid time to ensure a timely first pull.

Expectations:

* Must play well with others. Because we are a guild of mature adults, it is important to us that everyone remembers we are all here to have fun. We have zero tolerence for Drama or Disrespect. We do not care how good your DPS is, or how leet you think you are, it is imperative that you fit in well with our guild and treat everyone with respect or you will be asked to leave.

* Ability to meet our raid schedule. Because we do have limited raid time, and we are trying to push the endgame in that time, it is important that you have the ability to meet our raid schedule. We request that our Members keep 60% attendance, and our Veterans keep 80% attendance. While we understand that the demographic that we are seeking (mature adults) will have things that may arise and may cause them to miss a raid here and there, we do expect you to make a commitment to our guild.

* Know your class I think this one speaks for itself. One thing that is unique about our guild is that we do actively seek to help our players improve, but we cannot squeeze a rock to make water. You need to have a level of skill that is commensurate with the content we are currently working on.

* Gear We have always firmly believed that the player is more important than the gear they are wearing. If you can show us that you have skill, and dedication, we can gear you. While we would like you to have gear appropriate to the content we are working on, not having that gear will not be an unsurmountable hurdle to your application.

* Loyalty Monolith is a family. We have a high member retention rate, and when we recruit members it is important to us that they want to be a part of Monolith, which means enjoying the good and hanging in there through the bad. We are not a stepping stone to the next best thing. We have been up front and honest with you, and we expect the same courtesy in return.

If you think that Monolith is a good fit for you, please take the time to complete our recruitment application. This application can be found at http://www.monolithwow.com

Of Badges and “Welfare” Epics   9 comments

A good many people have weighed in on the new “welfare” loot and emblem changes that came with patch 3.2.  In case you’ve been living with your head in the clouds, the changes are as such:  the new 5 man instance drops iLevel 200-219 loots and all heroic instances now drop conqueror’s badges, with Triumph badges being awarded for completing the heroic daily.  From everything that I’ve read, a good number of folks view these changes negatively and with mounting displeasure.

Sure, it gives everyone access to tier level loot that you had to use your blood, sweat and tears to obtain.  Yes, it’s going to put even the nubbliest (is that even a word?!) alt *cough* Tsuname*cough* or non-raider close to on par with your raiding character.

But here is what I don’t quite understand:  why is this a bad  thing?

My Favorite Thing About 3.2…and Monolith is Recruiting!   Leave a comment

I have to say, I most definately have a favorite thing about 3.2.  And it 100% is Yogg-Saron’s clouds being more vocal!

We went in there tonight at about 11:00, because we had some extra time after Vezax, and thought we’d give Yogg 3 a few pulls before we called it (had our best phase 2 ever!).  Even with people being tired, and even with having raiding for a few hours prior, we managed to keep clean phase ones!  There is just something about the accountability that really forced people to stay focused and make a better effort to dodge the clouds that was really refreshing.  It is by far and away my absolutely favorite thing about the patch!  A close second, though, is the 3 minute innervate!  I find myself toss that sucker out to anyone and everyone!

With all of that being said, I’d also like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that we have a few spots open on our raiding roster, due to some people leaving the game as a result of life calling them away.  I wish them the best of luck in their endeavors; but as it is also my job to fill their holes, I thought I’d let everyone know that we have a couple of openings :)  Our recruitment post is after the break, if you are interested in learning more about Monolith and seeing what it is that we do.

For The…er, Horde!   Leave a comment

I’ve been traveling for work the past couple of days, which means I’m a little behind on the “hot” news.  However, the announcement of faction changes is something that I find exciting enough to comment on.  This is largely because I started my wow career on the alliance, and I have often said that I wish I could bring my alliance toons horde.  I only have two left of any significance: a level 70 warlock and a level 66 hunter, who is acting as an cross faction transfer wench.

Of those two characters, I don’t know if I will bring them both over or just my warlock.  I haven’t seriously played the hunter in well over a year, if not longer.  But I miss the warlock, so much so that I even started my very own little horde warlock, but I’ve not been very aggressive about leveling her up.

However, bringing the lock over, isn’t the only reason that I’m fairly excited.  Let’s take a look at a couple of things that will benefit from faction changes:

  • Recruiting- Anyone that has ever recruited before knows that this is a good change for recruiting new players.  It is going to help tremendously on imbalanced servers, or even just in general, to recruit without the potential constraint of faction.  The talent pool has just been significantly increased!  I do not think that this is a bad thing!  Honestly, I think that this is the best thing about this change.
  • Re-rolling – I know a number of people that have re-rolled to another faction to play with friends and/or join in a guild that they wanted to play with.  While re-rolling may be fun, not everyone wants to re-roll their main and give up everything that they have worked so hard to achieve.  They now have the option to play where ever they want.  This also goes hand in hand with the recruiting point mentioned above.

Now, I know that there are people that are not pleased with the thought of being able to change factions because it doesn’t follow the lore.  I can certainly understand these complaints, I really can, but to me the benefits of allowing the changes are so much better.  My only other “real” concern with this is the risk of polluting the pool, if you would.  That is to say that, at least on my server, a lot of our younger player base found its home on the alliance, and with that their maturity (or lack of), has been sort of a defining joke.  Although, I am really not sure how many children would really have the financial wherewithal to actively partake in these changes, so it probably is a fairly moot point.

Overall, I am excited about the change and generally think that it is a positive direction for the game.  I can transfer some toons over that I have on alliance and my job recruiting for our guild will become much easier as I will have access to the entire playerbase, and not just those of my faction.  (speaking of which… we currently have a couple of openings, looking for a lock, ret paladin, resto shaman and rogue ;) ).

And now a few bits of Randomness!

I finished the second book in the Sookie Stackhouse series while I was traveling.  I quite enjoyed it, and picked up the third book at the airport.  I am growing quite fond of the characters in the books, and at this point think that I would wholeheartedly recommend the series for anyone in the mood for a good read!

Val’ynar fragment count: 21

Last Hard Mode Hodir Attempt: 3:10 kill (So close!)

Holiday Raiding:  Full of scheduling conflicts and frustrations…so “progress” is mostly halted for the week, but we are doing some “fun” achievements as an alternative.  However, I am truly happy our next Holiday isn’t until September :P

Mynn update:  She hit 77 over the weekend, and can now fly again (yay!).
