K’s Pretentious Questions   3 comments

Keredria has started her own little “I want to know about you” post, and I thought that I’d oblige by completing it for her.  It’s not really about WoW, per se, but more about our blogging habits.  Which I think is pretty interesting.  So, without further ado, I provide you with my responses!

1. How long have you been blogging? What made you start? Who inspired you?

I have been blogging since March 2009.  I think my biggest inspiration for my blog was Phaelia.  I started this blog for two reasons: firstly Phaelia’s departure left a huge gap in the community and I thought I’d add my small voice to try and help fill it; secondly I desperately needed a venue to cool my heals.

I think the second reason is why this blog has kept chugging along.  I used to get extremely frustrated while leading raids and dealing with guild management.  It used to bottle up and make me cranky and, much like a soda can that you shook up before opening, I’d get agitated enough that I’d explode.  This wasn’t healthy for myself and certainly not for my guildmates.  While I know that I am not, and never have been, nearly as volatile as some other guild leaders, I really disliked who I became when my frustrations got the better of me.  It affected everyone around me, and Brade also received the  brunt of it.

I did a few “venting” posts on our guild sites blogs, and it felt really good to just get it out of my system.  I still find the writing very therapeutic for me.  Whether I’m venting about my guild or providing insight on raid encounters, druid information or guild management, it just has a very calming effect.  This has been noticed by those close to me, and those that have been in my guild for a great period of time have also commented on my “mellowing”.  I don’t advertise my blog openly to my guildmates, but some of them come across it of their own accord.  I think very few of them realize that this is my “two deep breaths”.

2. About how many hours a week would you estimate you spend on your blog?

I largely write during the week when I have downtime here or there during the day.  I would say that I spend perhaps an hour a day, sometimes more, in drafting my topics.  I generally do not blog while on vacation or on the weekends, but have been known to toss up a pertinent post during those times.

3. What kind of experience or background do you have with writing?

My undergraduate degree was in English Literature, and I had a knack for History Courses.  This meant that I wrote a lot in college.  I then went on to get my JD.  And of course we all know how overly verbose lawyers can be.  Needless to say, I saw my fair share of writing in law school as well.  I still continue to have a requirement of a fair bit of written communication.   Despite desperately clinging to my favorite book on grammar I still fail with basic grammatical errors in my writing constantly…but I try to learn something new every day! 🙂

4. Talk about how you come up with blog topics. Where do you get your ideas? What or who inspires you? Where and/or how do your brainstorming?

A lot of time I blog about what I feel.  This kind of goes hand in hand with needing a venue to decompress.  But I am not wound so tightly that I need to decompress constantly (honest!), so I frequently pull ideas from experiences that I have had in game.  I also frequently will think of something that I want to write about at random and jot notes down for future topics.

I try to blog about contemporary issues in both raiding and resto druid mechanics, since that is what I largely experience in the game.  Originally I had wanted to add in some paladin info, but frankly, there are more skilled people with more time than I have who can provide better information!  I tend to brainstorm in the car on my way to and from work, and sometimes thoughts come to me during raids or instances as well.  I have even gotten blog topic ideas walking through the supermarket!

I have also pulled a good number of topics from reading something that was written by someone else, and opining on the topic.  I think it’s important to have a bit of fun in your blog, so sometimes I do purely “fun” posts that have nothing to do with anything.  It’s my blog, I have the right, no?! 😉

5. Do you have any blogging rules or guidelines you follow? Is there anything you will not blog about?

I don’t think that I really have any “rules” that I follow, per se.  That being said I try not to blog about my personal life here.  Largely because, well I’m kinda private and it’s my personal life.  Nobody wants to be bored to tears about that, outside of the basics!  I also try to remember that the interwebs is open to anyone and everyone that may want to look at it.  So, if it’s something I won’t say to someone directly, I probably shouldn’t say it here.

6. Do you have any sort of a publishing schedule in terms of day of week or topic? Where do you do your writing?

I generally do not publish on the weekends, but do try to publish no less frequently than once a week.  I think I probably average 3ish posts a week.  I tend to do my writing when I have down time during the day.

7. How many drafts of potential blog posts do you have right now? In what medium do you draft your posts? How often do you completely scratch or delete drafts or blog post ideas?

Right now I have 5 drafts in my log.  Of those 3 will probably never see the light of day 🙂  One of them is a rant on how bad “An Evening with Kevin Smith” was live (who care, right?).  One is a “Memory Lane” post that was started as a three parter, but I’m not sure I’ll ever publish.  And one was a response back to someone that I thought better of posting!

I do most of my drafting in wordpress, but have done drafts in ink (you know…on actual paper, how arcane!) and in word before.  Most of my drafts make it to the “published” stage, but I have certainly canned a few as well!

8. If you had to leave your blog in your will to another blogger, who would you choose? To ask this in a slightly less morbid way, are there other blogs that you feel are similar to yours in content, style, or voice?

Oh man…tough question.  I’m not sure that I have an answer!  I’m a bit of an odd duck, and always have been!  I am at the point of my life where I’m OK with that.  I think we all have our own unique voices, and I like them all.  I think that if I had to leave it to someone, I’d leave it as a round table.  If I spent my life asking people to listen to me, I think I’d like to leave it open for all those people to talk back!

If I have to pick, I think that Kae has a sense of humor that is close to mine (and has comics!).  Keeva has shared a lot of the same experiences that I have. And I think that Tamarind and Keredria are appreciative of a lot of the things that I love about WoW.  So, I guess let’s mush all them into one person and have them ghost write for me after my leaves have fallen!

9. Has anything surprised you since you started blogging?

Honestly?  That I am still blogging! Hah.  I am also always surprised at the visitors that come to my little corner of the internet.  I really blog for myself, and I do try to provide helpful information, but I am constantly surprised to see that people other than Brade visit me each day and read what I have to say.

10. What are your goals or plans for your blog going forward? Any specific goals or plans for your blog in 2010?

Hmmm, well, I think I plan to just keep going on business as usual.  I enjoy blogging, and I enjoy having an avenue to express myself.  I anticipate that I’ll be doing to cataclysm blogging sometime in 2010.  And I’ll have the great “to troll or not to troll” debate with myself (I already know that I won’t troll, who am I kidding?).  One section that has fallen a bit by the wayside is my “Healing = Math” page.  It is in need of updated information…and will all be changing again in the near future when all the mechanics are changed.  I think I’d like to do better about keeping that updated.

I’m not going to tag anyone in particular for this, but like K would offer an open invitation to anyone who wants to answer K’s questions about blogging!

  1. Yay! My pretentious questions! (heh)

An undergrad english major and a JD, eh? Very very interesting (/strums fingers together).

I also love that you have done drafts in actual pen and paper!

  2. These are weirdly exciting – I suppose you get to learn random facts about people you might not otherwise discover. English literature, eh, mwahahaha. That’s my stomping around, as if it’s not totally obvious =P

  3. I would thank both Keredria and Beru for asking and answering these lovely questions. Ive been pondering making a blog myself for quite some time, and this very interesting read finally pushed me over the edge. I learn a lot from Beru 🙂
