Beru’s Resto Druid Weak Aura Exports   28 comments

With Power Auras having a bit of a bump in the road as we head into Mists, I have made the change to Weak Auras. I don’t know if it’s a permanent change, or if I’ll go back to Power Auras once they are fully functioning. But right now Weak Auras have been working well for me, once I figured out the interface. There is a bug where all of my auras appear to be missing, but are really there, you just have to enter combat to see them. To work around this bug simply create a new aura, name it…and do nothing else to it! This has worked well for me, and I’ve not had any issues with the bug since I did this *knocks on wood*. There is also supposed to be a lot of very cool functionality that Weak Auras has that I’ve not explored as yet that may make it more attractive in the long run.

If you get into Weak Auras and have trouble configuring them, let me know and I’ll be happy to answer any questions that you may have. I might not have the answer, as I am new to the mod myself, but I will certainly do my best to see if I can help!

Note: WordPress is having issues displaying the exports in some browsers. To copy the codes, click on them three times to highlight the whole code automatically, and then copy them into Weak Auras. Do not try to just highlight by dragging the mouse across, or you will not get the entire export.

Resto Weak Auras

This is the meat of my auras. Rather than show individual pictures for these, I figured it would be best to see how they all line up. Just like in Power Auras, I prefer to use the spell icons, rather than an aura, to mark my abilities. For me, this works best as my brain doesn’t have to go through the additional step of remembering what GIANT SMILEY FACE is telling me to do. This is subjective, however, and your personal preference may vary!

Mana Tide

I like to know when I am receiving the benefit of mana tide. As such, this aura lets me know when I have  it.

Clearcasting (OoC)

This aura lets me know that I have a clearcasting proc, and the time remaining to use the proc.

Innervate

This aura let’s me know that Innervate is available for use. I was absolutely thrilled to learn that my cookie monster sound wave to let me know when it triggered was part of Weak Auras!

This lets me know when harmony is active and how long I have left on the buff.

Lifebloom

This lets me monitor lifebloom, and lets me know how long until it expires and needs to be refreshed. I opted not to add stacks to it this time, as I can see that very well via Grid already.

Incarnation: Tree of Life

This lets me know when ToL is off of cooldown. The odd thing with this,  that I’m not sure how to get around (although, admittedly, I haven’t tried very hard) is that while you are in ToL the aura continues to show because you can now pop in and out of ToL without completely losing the buff, and the cooldown remains available until ToL has expired. If this bothers you, and you find a work around, please do let me know! The other thing I’ve not done with regards to this aura, yet, is create a second aura with a timer telling me how long I have remaining on my ToL buff.

Beru’s Healing UI Project – Part II: Power Auras   8 comments

The most common questions that I receive from both readers of my blog and those who watch my videos on YouTube are about my UI.  What mods do I use, how do I set it up, can I forward my addon and WTF folders.  I’ve received so many of them that I got it in my mind to do a video project where I walk though the different elements of my UI.  My goal in undertaking this (massive) project is to talk to people about which mods I’m using and more importantly why I’m using them.  Or in other terms, what I feel each mod provides to my raid experience as a healer.  It is not my intent to walk you through the set up of each individual mod (believe me, that video would be rated R, as there is much gratuitous profanity involved in that process), but rather offer some thoughts on how to set up your healing UI as a whole.

As I mapped this project out, I was able to break down the different elements of my UI into seven different categories.  I anticipate doing a video walk through for each of the seven categories, although I may be able to crunch category four and five into one video.  It is my hope that through doing this I will not only answer many of the UI questions that I’ve been asked, but also give some insight on different things that you may want to consider as you build your own UI (which can be an incredibly daunting task).  If I don’t address a certain mod in this particular video, don’t worry!  I will be addressing every raid related mod (and some non-raid related mods) throughout the course of this series, so just be patient and it will come :)

One thing that I think it is paramount to keep in mind anytime you are discussing UIs is that they are very personal, and that no two people’s interface will be identical.  Different people process information differently, and your UI will reflect that.  Just because something works for me does not mean that it will work well for you.  There is no “right” or “wrong”.  It’s important that you find something that works for you, and then continue to build on that foundation.

(Please note that this video will be best viewed at a higher resolution)

Shard of Woe and Jaws of Defeat Power Auras (with exports!)   1 comment

On use trinkets. The bane of every healer I know. When to maximize them, remembering when to click them, not forgetting to click them. I’m sure that you know well what I mean! Blizzard seems to love the on use trinket this expansion, and well, I want to make sure that I get the most bang from my buck with them. As such, I have turned to my handy dandy trusted friend, Power Auras!

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have questions about them :)

Jaws of Defeat Activated
I use this to let me know how much time I have on the buff. I don’t feel it necessary to track the stacks, as it’s not really going to have a huge effect on how I heal with the buff active. You may find that you like to know, and want to track them. It’s just not my preference!

Harmony Power Auras   8 comments

With Harmony being such a benefit to our overall healing, it will be very important for us to track this buff, and to know when to refresh it.  As such, I’ve set up two Power Auras for Harmony: one that lets me watch the remaining time on the buff and one to let me know that the buff has fallen off.  Because I think that they will be useful, I thought that I’d go ahead and share them!

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or have trouble getting them to work.

Dannie’s Holy Paladin Power Auras   7 comments

I’ve had a few people ask me about the power auras that I use for characters other than my druid.  I’ve been slowly working through the posts (read: I’m lazy), but I figured since I got Kitai’s up I’d be remiss not to get Dannie’s out as well.  Dannie is my second most played toon, and I feel that I am comfortable enough with her that I’d be able to swap between her and Beru if needed.  I’ve been slowly working through the T11 content with her in a one day a week (3 hours!) alt run that we’ve been doing for fun.  I think she’s currently sitting at 10/12.  The only encounter I’ve yet to do any healing with her on is Nefarian.

Before we get into the pictures and exports, I want to comment on my style. When I was learning Power Auras, the person that helped me learn the mod had told me that he tends to use icon settings so that he remembers what each setting is for, indicating that when he just used auras and squiggles and what not, he tended to forget what each “aura” indicated.  As I went on my Powa journey, I found that this was true for me as well, so all of my settings will mirror icons.

Now, there is no “right” way to do this, so if you prefer “auras” and that works better for you, you should set those up!  Everyone will find that something works different for them, and should experiment until they find something they feel comfortable with.

On to the Auras!

Kitai’s Prot Warrior Power Auras   2 comments

I’ve had a few people ask me about the power auras that I use for characters other than my druid.  I’ve been slowly working through posts of the auras that I’m using for both my warrior and my paladin, and via a very informal poll on Twitter on which set I should post next, the warrior won out.  I’m going to go ahead and throw out that I’m a mediocre to decent tank, and I’m certainly no Xav.  I play my tank largely for fun, and I’m far from an expert on Warrior tanking.  As such, you may find that the minimal auras that I use for Kitai’s tanking are insufficient for your tanking needs – and that’s fine!  What I tend to use my auras for are things that I tend to forget, think are important, and want to be reminded to make use of the ability.  You may find that you need more, or less, from your auras.

Power Torrent Power Aura   2 comments

I’ve had a few people ask me if I use a power aura to track Power Torrent procs.  The answer is: absolutely!  Since I’ve had a few people asking about it, I thought it would probably be relevant to go ahead and share the aura I’m using to track my procs.  In doing so, however, I just want to take the time to re-iterate that while it’s ideal to innervate while power torrent is proc’d – do not wait an extensive amount of time for a proc before innervating.  You will actually end up doing more harm than good, and not maximizing your innervates!

I generally follow a 10 second rule.  Once my innervate is off of cooldown, I will give it 10 seconds for power torrent to proc – if it’s not up in that time I will innervate regardless (assuming I am in need of the mana, which I usually am!).  I also have set a 70% mana rule as well – meaning that if I hit 70% mana I will utilize my first innervate even if I do not have a power torrent proc.  That being said, I can usually time my first innervate to go out on a proc by forcing the first proc while pre-hotting the tank (assuming he pulls straight away) and setting up the ICD timer on the proc. I’ve generally found that if I do this my innervate cooldowns line up fairly nicely with subsequent procs.

(It is the very subtle star burst just above my nameplate.)

Using Power Auras to Track the Resto T11 4 Piece Bonus   4 comments

About a week ago, I made the decision to purchase the T11 breastplate so that I could obtain the T11 4 piece set bonus. Now, ideally I’ll snag a T11 helm and swap back to the Magmaw breastplate, but for now, even with the T11 breastplate lacking spirit, it is still an upgrade provided that I keep the 4 piece set bonus active. That’s the trick though, isn’t it? To keep the bonus active you must maintain a 3 stack of lifebloom. “Easy!” you say! “No problem, I do that anyways!” you say! Yea…that’s what I thought too. And guess what – I’m wrong.

Even though I generally have 90%+ uptime on my lifebloom in any given encounter, I have found that I am only keeping my “Bloom” buff up about 75% of the time. To me, this is pretty unacceptable considering that I took a lesser optimized piece of gear on the premise that with the bonus active it’s still an upgrade. And so, I set out to try and remedy this problem and increase my “Bloom” up time.

I created the below Power Aura to help me recognize when I’ve lost the “Bloom” buff – indicating that I’ve let my 3 stack of lifebloom drop and need to get it back up ASAP.

Version:4.9; b:0.6549; anim1:11; g:0.102; icon:INV_Misc_Herb_Felblossom; buffname:Bloom; texture:28; alpha:1; mine:true; exact:true; spec2:false; combat:true; size:0.5; y:52; inverse:true

The circle spins around – annoyingly – to get my attention straight away.  The only thing I may change about it is the color.  I have found that in Nef’s red tinted room the pink is rather difficult to see – and I’m wondering if a bright green circle might not be more visible.  Regardless of if you use this aura, or create your own, I can’t recommend enough making sure you have an indicator to let you know when you’ve lost the “Bloom” buff to help ensure you are maximizing the bonus! :)

Beru’s T11 Boss Power Auras (BWD, TFW, BoT)   5 comments

One thing that we did this expansion is make Power Auras a required mod for our progression raiding team.  One of the reasons that we did this was because, as a team, we have historically struggled with situational awareness in our raids and we decided that we wanted to improve this.  Now, Power Auras will not fix all problems – and people who are prone to stand in the bad will still generally stand in the bad, but this has helped a lot of folks learn encounters quicker and become more focused on key aspects of an encounter that could potentially lead into a wipe.

Now, please note that folks will absolutely still need to know what is going on around them, and Power Auras cannot play a person’s character for them.  But they can help quite a bit, especially when learning a new encounter.  In fact, we sometimes would stop a few minutes during learning phases to create an aura that we think would be helpful going forward.

For us integrating Power Auras into our raid team has been highly beneficial.  We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from our raiders on how much it has helped them on Boss Encounters and with learning new mechanics.  And outside of that, we have also now have a lot of our raiders looking at what else Power Auras can provide them and creating and sharing their own auras amongst their classmates to help boost performance, which I think is fantastic.

Now, before I share the Auras that I created for our boss encounters, I want to talk about them for just a moment.  First and foremost - you will see that many of them look identical.  This is because we wanted the warnings to be simple and now overly complicated.  We wanted them to be OH GOD THE BAD!  And we wanted to brain to process the information quickly.  Where the auras can be intuitive, I tried to make them as such.  I think simplicity is important when creating Boss Auras because there is already a lot going on in encounters that your brain needs to process, without added another level of complication.

Additionally, all of my auras have auditory queues.  This is because even with an OMG HUGE RED SKULL in your face, sometimes you just miss it.  But it’s a little harder to miss a cackle or SHING! coming out of your computer.  I find that auditory queues help a lot of people.

You may find other things that you’d like to add auras for on different boss encounters – this is just the list of auras that we’ve found beneficial to date.

Now – let’s take a look at what Auras we’ve put together!

Friendly Chef’s Hat Reminder (Power Auras)   30 comments

After realizing that I did OUR ENTIRE RAID in my bloody CHEF’S HAT, I made the below extremely obnoxious Power Aura to tell me when I have my Chef’s Hat equipped.   I figured that I’m probably not the only person to have done this, realized it, and been highly pissed off at themselves for their oversight, so I thought I’d share and save you my pain! ;)
